Conversion Tonight

Dean's World should complete conversion to WordPress tonight, or at least the bulk of it will.

Does this mean you'll all need new comment accounts? Afraid so. So try to be patient, and just apply for a new account when the new system comes into place. We'll get things back to normal over the next week or so.

erg, there was no way to read in the user database and create the accounts automatically? seeing as how the posts are going to be imported, its not like the user accts should have been that much harder. especially if you are paying for it!

Well yes, but it's already a hideous amount of work because basically the only kind of conversion is text dump. I'll just take that as a lesson to not ever commit to proprietary closed source software again.

just throwing this out there for your consideration, but why not have open commenting for a while to ease the transition? There are plugins a plenty that will protect against spam but not require a commentor to log in. I use one at Haibane.info, called Peter's Math Anti-Spam.

Akismet, which comes with most WordPress installations, really is excellent. I use open commenting on my blog (yeah, I know, lots less traffic than yours) and I get maybe one spam comment leak through every week.

But it's your blog, your rules--grammar, so to speak :). I'll happily re-register.

Allow me to second Akismet. It works very well. There is also another plugin which automatically closes off comment on posts over X days old: most spambots seem to target old posts anyway.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
