Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

In Soviet Russia, Globe Warms You!

Via Glenn, this is horrifying:
The authors conclude that an authoritarian form of government is necessary, but this will be governance by experts and not by those who seek power.
These are precisely the same arguments that gave us Communism. 100 million dead later, some people still haven't learned.

Or, as Burke put it:
The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion.

One of the more disturbing moments in Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" movie was when he said that scientists are "pure." He literally used that word. He was describing how scientists are pure and basically more moral than real people since they are concerned only with facts and wherever the truth leads them.

If that's not a way of portraying scientists as an infallible priestly caste, I don't know what is.

Two words: bull shit. They are seeking power. The only difference between them and Che Guevara is they lack his fashion sense. Give them enough time, and they'll pick up his gun.

When a scientist draws a government paycheck to study what the government tells him to study, and his salary is dependent on agreeing with the consensus view of his fellow scientists, is she legitimately a true objective researcher anymore?

Want to know what causes global warming? Fred Thompson likes his showers hotter than the rest of mankind.

Do you want to tell Fred Thompson to take colder showers?

And then there’s the inconvenient truth that in the US, greenhouse emissions have been trending down without government intervention.

While at the same time, in an unabashedly authoritarian country, (which might also be the current emissions leader), emissions are climbing.

Maybe these experts should try their theories in China first. Seems like an optimum test bed to me.

No, but only because of what Jeri might do.

"experts and not by those who seek power"...riiight.

For example, among the engineers who dominate top government offices in China, there probably aren't any at all who are interested in power.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
