Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

And then there were four (well, three)

rather than make an easy prediction about Florida I decided to go for some post-game commentary instead. It's McCain's nomination to lose, now.

And good riddance to Rudy.

Thank God. I thought McCain had it locked up, but now that he's been given the Aziz kiss of death, I can rest easy. ;)

It seemed like every day there was another lefty hit piece on Giuliani. Considering how socially moderate he was, it's hard to understand.

I guess they have to hate someone.

well, I guess Im a lefty, but my disdin for Rudy wasnt ameliorated by his social liberalism because some things are more important - and in Rudys case, it was his unapologetic authoritarian streak and his corrupt lackeys he actually preferred to surround himself with. Look up why Rudy's police chief during the famed turnaround of New York was fired.

oh but wait Rudy was pro choice so i guess corruption, scandal, and lack of ethcs dont matter! sheesh.

Aziz,

Oh please. Rudy himself had no personal connection to that scandal -- unlike Obama and Rezko, or the Clintons and Whitewater, or Edwards and his pregnant campaign chief, or Bill and Monica.

Kerik did a good job, but he turned out to be corrupt. The worst you can say of Rudy is he wasn't a great judge of character.

You've been drinking the Kos-Aid, my friend.

Let's be realistic: Giuliani was very liberal-left for a Republican, performed very well both before and during 9/11, and the only real reason for the left to hate him was his poll numbers.

And now we'll see the attacks on McCain start. His moderation won't mean any more than Rudy's did.

Dave,

being very liberal for a Republican does not make you tasteful to Democrats. And let's not kid ourselves on how liberal Rudy would have been. No less than Norman Podhoretz was his foreign policy advisor. That's what lost him my vote, at least.

zach,

Right, I didn't expect Dems to greet him with open arms. My point was just that it was odd there was so much lefty antipathy to Rudy, as opposed to the other (generally more conservative) candidates.

It seemed odd that they were so glad Rudy was out of the race, given that the other contenders were generally less friendly to their views.

I opposed Rudy more than any other Republican candidate because my number one issue is foreign policy, especially vis. a vis. the Middle East. In my humble opinion, the last thing our world needs currently is to have the NormPod/DPipes vision inflicted upon the Islamic world. I agree with Aziz -- "good riddance"!

Dave,

There definitely was probably some fear about Rudy being the only one who could seriously win against a Democratic candidate. But he also was (arguably) the most pro-war of the primary candidates, certainly the only one explicitly running on a "remember 9/11" platform. Regardless of his position on anything else, the Democratic base is going to rage against him for that sin alone.

A socially moderate authoritarian statist is still an authoritarian statist. Good riddance to bad rubbish. As for McQueeg, he has only a nodding familiarity with the Constitution, and the parts he knows he doesn't much like.

Well, in an American election, the American world is the most important issue. Just as, in a German election, German interests rule, and in an Indian election, Indian interests rule, etc.

Like every other nation, Americans have to look out for themselves, because no one else will...

Mary,

even if you edit DanielH's sentiment to read:

"The last thing our American world needs..."

it's still true.

How would the Pipes/NormPod vision cause any damage to the American world?
