Want a Wii?

I walk you through the process of finding one at Haibane.info. The key words are vigilance, and perseverance.

And if you still can't score a Wii, consider a Vii instead.

I'll bet Nintendo is fighting tooth and nail against that clone. After what happened to IBM I can hardly blame them...

Brilliant idea:
If they eventually come up with a portable or smaller version of the Wii, they should call it the PiiWii.

Thank you, thank you.

Sheesh, Aziz, the least you could have done is put in the store locator links. I did when I wrote on this same topic last Tuesday... which is when I bought my kids' Wii.

Joan, I figured that everyone knows the local retailers in their neighborhood. I suppose i should add them in, though.

Sheesh, Joan, are you always so snotty when you make a request?

I thought the use of word "sheesh" would convey I was kidding, Dean. Not to mention "the least you could do..." because looking up all those URLs, while not exactly difficult, is kind of a pain in the ass. As usual, tone does not convey well in print. My bad; sorry.

Anyway, I was inordinately relieved to finally nab one of those suckers for my kids last week. Please excuse my lame attempts at humor.

Aziz, the one thing I would say that was probably true last year but is not true this year is that no one is advertising Wii consoles in the Sunday ad papers. Back in November, before Thanksgiving, they would often have them on Sundays (or so various retailers told me), but since Black Friday, there's no guarantee they'll have them for Sunday. There hasn't been a Wii in a Sunday ad since Thanksgiving.

no worries Joan. are you sure they don't have the Wii ads in the sunday circulars anymore? that surprises me, since there are so many more Wiis in circulation now. I am curious, how many weeks did it take to score yoru Wii?

Sorry Joan. I'm probably just cranky today.

Let's see -- I saw them in October and thought it wouldn't be a big deal to get one later, so I didn't buy one then. As soon as November hit and I started looking in earnest, I couldn't find one. I figured I would get up insanely early and score one on the day after Thanksgiving, because my local Target guy told me they would definitely have units that day. I was at our local Target at 4:20AM on Black Friday (6AM opening), and was at the counter watching the last 6 or so Wiis go to people standing behind me, who were more grabby/pushy than I was. I just didn't have it in me to grab one out of someone else's hand, even though that someone was actually standing behind me, and was technically taking a Wii that should've been mine since I got there earlier.

After that bout with cosmic injustice, I started following "the method", calling and asking everywhere. I got up early on Sunday mornings to be there when the doors opened, but they didn't have any those days. It actually took me less than a week of calling around, and there were a few times when I heard "you just missed them."

I don't know about this week's Sunday circulars since I didn't check them all, but I know that the past few weeks, the consoles themselves have not been listed, just the games and accessories.

I think you're right that there are more around
this year than last, but they are doing very limited shipments, so timing is everything -- your ability to get to the store quickly is probably the most important thing.

Hey Dean -- have a good week ahead, OK?

Joan, you were way more dedicated than I was. I established a rule for myself when I went Wii-hunting: it wasn't worth it to wake up early. (not out of principle, you understand. Just laziness). one of the questions I routinely asked the staff at the retail outlets was, when did the first guy show up? the answer was always 4am.

I think that if you cast your net wide enough and are methodical, you will have success. Most of the people who are Wii hunting do so sporadically, but if you have a strategy you tilt the odds in your favor.
