Shred potatoes. Fry in oil. Serve hot.

Ron, is that all there is to latkes? What's the difference between that and hash browns?

If that's all it is, then my Dad served latkes almost every time he made breakfast.

Martin - my question exactly.

Happy Chanukkah anyway, to those who celebrate it.

Actually you put in some egg, too.

Foam up some milk by bubbling steam through it. Pour two shots of expresso into a glass. Top with the steamed milk.

No, wait. That's lattes.

Polish grandmother's version:

Grate potatoes, add egg and a little flour, fry. Serve with sour cream.

Having been born and raised in the land of Famous Potatos, spuds are in my blood. Is there is a difference between latkes and potato pancakes (not hashbrowns)? I have had one or the other, and it had chives (I think). Yummmm.....checking clock; yup, it's lunchtime here in the PNW.

If I'd been asked, I would have said "Bill Dooley" is the least-likely name _ever_ for a Polish grandmother ;)

Ahh, my sainted, departed Bubbe had a great one, but she is in heaven, no doubt cooking a lot of them...

Why does Chanukkah seem to have more spellings than Qaddafy? Is there an "official" Romanization?

Thanks for the reminder, Andrew. It got me into gear getting something I have been craving for a few weeks. Corned Beef. And, not that rubberized garbage you get at Kroger's deli counter, but the real deal. Off I went to a local Kosher deli for a half pound of honest to goodness first cut corned beef. Of course, not having the whole Kosher thing hanging over my head, I melted some swiss along with the sauerkraut, spicy mustard and kosher pickles. Then washed it down with some wonderful apple kugel.

Happy Chanukkah, Ron and everyone else celebrating.

No, which would be why there are so many.

I like Chanukah myself. Just so I can pronounce it wrong and make myself laugh. (I'm easily amused.)

I was a bagger at Krogers in Detroit in 1955. I started at 65 cents an hour and worked my way up to $ 1.84 per hour.

What most of you are describing here are german potato pancakes, not latkes.

Anyway, don't forget to grind some onion into the mix. Don't overdo it with flour, and make sure the oil is hot. Then try serving the hot pancakes with cold apple sauce.

Sour cream is more for crepes suzette, or some related kind of french crap. To me, eating potato pancakes with sour cream would be like ordering a Chicago hot dog with ketchup; something that would have made Mike Royko puke.

Yeah, lest I forget, happy Chanuka to all you jewish guys and gals.

That one's a minor holiday I've always been interested in. Because it marked the time the Jews rose up against the local imperialists who had taken over the country, beat the bejesus out of them, kicked them out of their country, cleansed their temple.

Then they got back to being the same kind of fractious and argumentive Jews that pulled their ancient kingdom apart in the time of King Shlomo and his successors.

Some people never learn.

But for a little way, they pulled themselves together and whipped enemy ass. Which is the most enobling thing any free people can do to maintain their liberty.

Take no prisoners.

Arnold, Heh.

One note: the Syrian Greek Empire were not merely "local" imperialists, if you think about the world in terms of who among it made to nowadays.

Yeah, what about all those cultures who never made it into the books; their history merely oral- and lost or not lost, or not merely oral?

My only question is where are they now?
