However, maybe people should educate themselves about climate change. Then, the Al Gores of the world would have some serious explaining to do.
This "issue" extends much further than the partisan babble that has become "Global Warming".
We must pay attention if we are concerned about:
a) the health of our planet
b) where our money will be going
c) those goddamn kids who keep playing with matches....causing earthquakes. I suggest Ritalin.
In reference to b).
The Kyoto Protocol failed because its own projections were dubious and asked the U.S. to take it the ass for 100s of billions of dollars. China is building coal factories like mad and are asked to do next to nothing.
Also, a friend of mine is working on a grad(thesis)project that would bury industrial CO2 beneath bedrock.
Seems simple, but the projected cost would nearly double EVERYONE'S utility bill. That's what he said. The project is harmless until the cost vs benefit aspect is examined.
So, despite one's political handicap, we must all pay attention.
Maybe Thorpe's petty little shenanigan should be viewed that way.
My theory is that the Republican party would be well served by considering the following strategy:
1. Oftentimes perception is reality. Thus:
2. The fear of global warming should be harnessed to:
3. Destroy demand for oil via electric vehicles like the (upcoming) Chevy Volt, so that:
4. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and others will experience near economic bankruptcy. Resulting in:
5. Iran being too poor to pursue nuclear weapons, and Saudi Arabia too poor to spread their twisted version of Islam:
This can be accomplished because:
6. Conservatives were the first environmentalists.
7. It would not be hard to establish a case of hypocrisy against the private jet flying and SUV driving and mansion living hollywood liberal elite, and many members of the Democratic party.
And:
8. This type of thing has happened before. The Republican party recruited religious conservatives to join the party.
I worry that:
9. The religious conservatives and liberal environmentalists would not get along because:
10. Abortion and gay rights will be given too much attention at a time when Iran is attempting to get their hands on nuclear weapons and already deserve a royal ass kicking in front of the entire world.
Hey, I guess I'm already part way done with my essay supporting my theory that greatly reducing demand for oil should be a strategic 'national security based' policy of America and most other nations including Japan, China, and the EU...! Cool, that was easy. Now to refine it....
Let us not paint Gore's work with an excessively wide brush.
While I very much disagree with the man, calling Gore's work a "hoax" is way over the line. That term implies that he knowingly decieved people with his movie and his current position on the environment.
Such a claim is as slanderous to the former VP as claiming that Bush "knew" there were no WMDs in Iraq or lied about it.
That term implies that he knowingly decieved people with his movie
Oh, I think he did, quite deliberately.
Look, he has to know the IPCC estimates say we are not going to get the kind of flooding he talks about any time in the next 100 years. His movie makes it sound much more likely than it is. But it makes a great sales pitch to say half of FL will be underwater.
Defenders will point out he said "could" and doesn't really specify a time frame. OK, sure, but if someone made a movie saying we should all donate 10% of our income to build a giant rocket to move the Earth because the Sun could at some point expand into a red giant and destroy all life, it would be completely accurate too, just very misleading and counterproductive.
Gore has a long history of exaggerating to advance his interests. It wasn't just claiming to have taken the initiative that led to the creation of the Internet; he claimed to have discovered the Love Canal and that he was the basis for Love Story, just to name the most well-reported incidents.
You want to exaggerate your personal accomplishments to make your candidacy sound more exciting? OK, lame, but no skin off my back. But GW is supposed to be a serious issue, with millions of lives and trillions of dollars at stake.
Clearly, temperatures are rising, and maybe it has something to do with CO2, and maybe it will have serious implications in our lifetime. But self-aggrandizing politicians making deceptive enviro-agitprop do nothing to advance our understanding of the issue or help determine what a responsible course of action should look like.
And if Gore really believes GW is a serious threat, maybe he should start acting like it. Reduce his own carbon footprint: sell the giant houses and fleet of autos, and live a modest $50,000-a-year lifestyle. Stop jetting around in Gulfstreams. Give speeches for free, over the Internet, instead of charging hundreds of thousands in fees in giant auditoriums that thousands of people will drive to.
I agree. I think that I agree.
I agree that I think I agree that I think I agree.
Damn.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.
Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.
Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.

Let's keep a sense of proportion here.

Well, Gore uses weather balloons as a main argument for drastic global temperature change. This is incorrect. See test question ten.
