Toyota and Warcraft

I saw this commercial on TV a couple nights ago and laughed my butt off. I suspect you need to be a gamer to fully appreciate the humor.

"I am the law-givah!"

I LOLed, and I don't even play World of Warcraft (Warbirds and Dawn of Aces were more to my taste).

It's not on a par with "Leeeeroy Jeeeennnnnkkkiiinnnnssss!", but it's still funny as hell.

Warlocks are totally OP!

I couldn't believe when that came on TV on Sunday.

Who ran that commercial? What's it a commercial for??

Dan the Highway guy (mail) (www):
It's in the series of Toyota's tough truck commercials. They have other ones with the Loch Ness Monster, a meteor hitting the truck, and with that giant car crushing 'robot'. All are variants of things that should destroy the truck, yet it comes through unscathed. And they all have the theme that the truck is never mentioned in the audio, and no taglines.

I knew what it was a commercial for as soon as the truck appeared in it.

Dean Esmay:
Ah. Well those two you linked at least show the Toyota Tacoma logo at the end. This one didn't, and I guess I missed John's headline.

I think they're pretty cool commercials, now that I've seen 'em.

The other good line was, "There's no trucks in World of Warcraft!"

That's just that particular edit of it:

Ahhh, that would have cleared the confusion.

LOL. Funny commercial. Very forward-thinking for whoever's running Toyota's current campaign. Right alongside all those ads Toyota's putting out bragging about how many American manufacturing plants they have and how many Americans they employ. Very astute people, the current crop at Toyota.

Although their marketing chief in the US recently got woo'd away by Chrysler. It'll be interesting to see if suddenly Chrysler becomes so innovative...

Having been reading Seth Godin a bit, and merging what he says with what most people understand about the corporate DNA of Chrysler (and other US automakers), it would seem to me that they would have a really tough time making things that innovative. I don't think we'll ever see that desire to go beyond, that ability to let go of their comfort level, from the US autos, which they would need to do to do something innovative and edgy.

That's to say nothing of the continuing horrible design features of US autos.

Dean Esmay:
Are you kidding? Some of the newest Chrysler and Ford products kick butt dude!

Dan the Highway guy (mail) (www):
The newest Ford I've been in, an '07 Explorer, has just horrible design features: The gearshift looks like something they found at a 'marital aids' store, and the rear passenger doors have pull handles BELOW armrests at knee level, and way up near the hinges, so if you close the door by pulling the handle, your wrist gets bent backward and smashed between your knee and the handle, while requiring a ton of force cause it's way up at the hinges. And that's in just about 10 minutes of riding in one.

If you love their new stuff, that's awesome. For me, they just do not work, on pretty much any level. I guess I'm just hooked on Honda. :)

I love my Ford Freestyle (newer ones will be Taurus X, but without the continuous transmission.) It's well-designed and has the awesome flip-folding seats for large cargo (such as a washer.) It's been getting roughly 25 miles to the gallon lately, which is nice for a car that's designed to seat six adults.

And the fact that I didn't even get bruised the time we were rear-ended and I was in the back row... well, that was nice.

But I have never understood why people like the Chevy Impala. Most un-ergonomic car I've ever been in, and it's ugly inside to boot.

Chrysler itself will probably stay upscale in its advertising, but I can easily see Dodge and Plymouth embracing something like this.

Dean Esmay:
Plymouth is officially dead. That marque was discontinued several years ago.

But Dodge and Mopar are very much alive and well. Indeed, for the struggling automaker, Dodge and Mopar are the Crown Jewels. And the company is (rightly) doing everything possible to polish and enhance the value of those marques. Which they should, since Mopar rocks and Chrysler's reputation for innovation is rightly legendary.
