Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Am I overreacting?

Now, before anybody puts in their 2 cents worth, I want you to know I use Windows Defender on automatic daily, and SpyBot less frequently, but certainly not never. I know about online security. I've been online since 1995.

I just sent an e-mail to a friend, and the system sent it to an e-mail addy I'd never seen before.

Weirds me out, it does.

Any suggestions?

One more thing -- yes I do run AVG anti-virus daily.

Trudy, can you check with your friend and see if he/she has ever used that address before?

I have seen some mail tools forget which address you told them to use, and just pull one from the list of all messages to or from that person. This can get confusing if the person has had lots of addresses over time.

As it turns out, it was my bud changing addies.

Oh, I reamed her a new one. I've always been at risk b/c the fembots specialize in electronic mischeif.

Damn. A serious moment of paranoia, it was.

I think I'm going to score that one as a touch for me, or close enough.

I thought of you while I was listening to the radio on my drive home tonight. Jim Bohannon had two ladies on discussing Domestic Violence Awareness Week. As they were throwing out shocking statistics, I imagined you kicking the radio and demanding that they tell the rest of the story.

Remember: Even paranoids have enemies.

I don't use Defender - I use the free version of Spycatcher. It doesn't remove the baddies it finds - which in my case are cookies - but it tells me where they are so I can remove them by hand if I want.

You might also want to look into Tor and Peerguardian for privacy.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
