Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

In the Sticks

Last night I moved my son into his apartment- he'll be attending Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH and found an opportunity to live cheaply off-campus, so he jumped at it. As we unloaded the van and he and his roommate unpacked I reached for my cell phone to call home and let my wife know I would be later than I'd thought...

NO SERVICE.

I asked them about it and they both flipped open their phones...

NO SERVICE.

And so we finished and I headed home, trying not to giggle too hard at the thought of these two teenagers, children of the age of total connectivity, sitting in their new apartment up in the hills of Northern New Hampshire with no phone, no cable TV, no Internet, and a 30 minute drive to any place they might be able to avail themselves of such things.

The Cable and Internet won't be connected until next weekend. I figure he'll be home by tomorrow morning.

I lived for the last several years in a trailer with no phone, no TV (not just no cable but no TV) no internet and darn poor radio. I had cell service but that's about it. I got used to it and the lack of rent was nice. I saved $600 every month and had a (mostly) dry place to sleep. My ability to survive a month on $200 saved my bacon a few times when my funding ran out. I also have a remarkable book collection...

It's amazing what we take for granted anymore.

Horrifying.

If I lose the Internet for an hour it's traumatic.

So far he's holding out, but I suspect they are pirating somebody's unsecured wireless... that kind of willpower they just don't have :)

...So I expect he'll be picking up the local cable company's VOIP for his phone service, then?

My husband and I, internet junkies both, lived without a connection for over a year due to anger at the lying phone company. (Our apartment managers even got on the case— this was shortly before the company lost a judgement in regards to their horrible customer service.)

I was running a webcomic at the time through a once-a-week hookup at a friend's place. Hooray for auto-updaters!

Well, the next-door neighbor let them hitchhike on his connection and their own goes in on Tuesday. They are looking at VOIP, but I'm querying Verizon regarding IP Mini-stations. T-Mobile has them: you plug it into your cable modem and it routes calls via VPN to the provider's network. Just don't know if Verizon has the technology right now.

John, can he get Time-Warner in his area? I can say from experience that their cable-phone service is excellent. Great sound, caller-ID just like the phone company, free long distance, and you can use a regular phone. What's not to like? I got a great deal here in southwest Ohio where I'm paying about $63/month for my Roadrunner plus phone service for a year.

True, when the power's out, yer SOL, but they're very upfront about that. I'm going to get a "disposable" cell phone for emergencies and keep it in my car.

BTW, RoadRunner seems to have upgraded their normal cable-modem internet plan, at least in some markets. It would seem that 6Mbps is the new standard for many providers.

I just tested my connection via www.testmy.net, and excellent site, and right now I'm running at:
Your connection is: 6660 Kbps or 6.7 Mbps
You downloaded at: 813 kB/s
You are running: 116 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 1.26 second(s)
Diagnosis ^info^: Awesome! 20% + : 38 % faster than the average for host (rr.com)
This was tested from a 5983 kB file and took 7.36 seconds to complete

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
