I didn't know the network demanded stand-alone episodes. I suppose that makes sense from a network perspective, but as a fan I hate it.

I want the TV equivalent of a long novel. Something like Lord of the Rings at 50 hours instead of 12.

I understand what you're saying, Michael, but networks love stand alone episodes because new viewers can jump in without feeling too lost. Even Babylon 5, pretty much a 5-year novel written by one man, tried to throw potential new viewers a bone with a stand alone "Watch this to know what's going on" episode from time to time.

No surprise... the show jumped the shark with the whole killing off (but not killing off) Starbuck stunt.

The show has decreasd in quality each season. I hope it finds its first season magic as it brings the story to a close.

At least SciFi cares. CBS jilted all of us Jericho fans....

You think it jumped the shark with Starbuck?

Huh. A lot of other people would put that line somewhere in season two.

Guess it just goes to show not even everyone can agree when the show started to suck.

I happen to believe in never jumped the shark. It just had a few bad episodes. It's kinda like Godwin's Law. Like the word "nazi" is thrown around so much as to lose its impact, so too is "jumped the shark."

Can't a show just have a few bad episodes without "jumping the shark?" Can't people dislike politicians, or have political disagreements, without someone being called a nazi?

BSG had some bad episodes. It never jumped the shark. Or, to make it clear, it never sold out. And accusing someone of selling out is something I'd never engage in unless it was something egregious.

Like watching American Idol.

Or, perhaps more accurately, inviting this year's American Idol winner on the show to sing in a special concert for the downtrodden colonists.

Then, yeah, I'd say the show "jumped the shark."

Anything short of that is just a bad episode and that happens. No one bats 1000. The really great players bat around .300 and we worship them.

I'm with you, Kevin. BSG has had some weak moments but overall it's still quality. I'm looking forward to the fourth season and both happy and sad that it's the last one. Maybe we'll get a movie afterwards as well...

Dean Esmay:
I viewed the show as genuinely groundbreaking artistically in its first season, and, I believed certain things based on what I was seeing and hearing that I felt they later wussed out on.

Nevertheless I'm pretty sure that they can win back my respect completely with this season, especially if they're clear: they really are going somewhere, and are going to get there and be done.

But you know, my war cry with most television shows is that if someone doesn't have the guts to write "the end" then every show eventually peters out because its fans just don't care about it anymore. It's part of why I stopped watching most drama TV. I'd really love a show, and then eventually it would start to suck a little, then to suck a lot, then I couldn't stand it anymore.
