Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

A worthy cause.

What sickens so much is those who defend Chavez just because he's a Bush critic. Yeesh.

No surprise that I don't really care for Pres. Bush, but I truly wish for evil to befall Chavez. I want to waterboard him. Seriously, I dream about it. He's a bug, and he needs to be introduced to my windshield...today. About the only thing Pat Robertson ever got right in his life is talking about "taking Chavez out."

Chavez is a thug. Those on the left who have embraced him (like Danny Glover and Cindy Sheehan in particular) have squandered any hint of credibility they may have ever had. Which, of course, was not much to begin with.

But then again, these same people wear Che Guevera stickers and T-shirts proudly, when Che was a vicious murdering thug who had virtually no redeeming qualities as a human being.

I am always amazed when I see someone sporting a Che logo. I assume they are ignorant of what Che actually did and stood for, because I hate to think that they actually know anything about the man and still proudly wear his likeness.

Sean, that last part is frequently true; I've told a fair number of people about Che's exploits, and the near-universal reaction is shocked surprise.

It's sad, really.

Two observations: first, Kennedy, Obama, Hillary, and McCain have all spoken out against the shutdown. The cite might have been more impressive if not for the unintentionally funny remark that Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International were a "diverse" group. :)

Second, all I read about are denunciations, "calls" for ...something... and public protests. You know, marches, stuff like that. The point is that everyone's talking and not much else. Now maybe, just maybe, if the Venezuelans had some guns and the social instinct to self-organize, they'd do more than talk...

I suspect that if Chavez remains in power for long a lot of non-Venezuelans will also wish they had done more than talk.

I never thought I'd look back wistfully at the era of corporate colonialism and CIA-sponsored coups.

Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.
