Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Assertion of the day

By December 31, 2007 the U. S. will continue to have 80,000 or more troops in Iraq.

Actually I lied. I have another assertion for comment. Whomever is elected president in 2008, regardless of the platform on which he or she runs, will continue to leave our military in Iraq.

You're more than likely right. On both counts.

Hell, you could have said 2027 and you would still probably be right.

Look no further than Germany, Korea and Okinawa to see if you detect a trend.

The first assertion is true. The second assertion is more likely than not. I could see Barack Obama removing troops ASAP upon election.

We need to get those troops out of those places - especially SK and Germany. After all, aren't we "preventing the government from making hard choices" - in South Korea and Germany?

I'd like to get troops out of Germany and into Poland simply because of the hostility of the German government and press. They don't deserve to have American soldiers contribute to their economy.

I agree, ths consequences of withdrawal are too destructive for reasonable people to allow, regardless of any campaign talk of "ending the war."

The reality is that, as in 1944, we are at war whether we like it or not and do not have the ability to unilaterally end the conflict with Islamic extremists. Peace requires two willing parties.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
