Gamer question:

Andrew Cory

I see that Fable (for the PC) is selling for about 20 bucks. Is it worth it? Some games, of course, aren't worth the cost of steeling them, and I recall my RPG obsessed former roommate not playing this one very long...

Any thoughts?

It's probably worht 20 bucks. I was terribly unimpressed with it when I bought and played it. This was when it first came out on the Xbox for 50+ bucks.

On the other hand the PC version has some added content and since it's cheaper it might be worth it now.

If your machine can handle it, skip Fable and get Oblivion. You'll pay more, but the value you get will be much greater.

Honestly, I had fun with Fable. It wasn't deep, or long, though. The PC version has an extra area and a couple other extras, which helps it a little. Hacking, slashing, and questing is easier, more straightforward, and fun in Fable than it is in Oblivion in my opinion. I didn't play Oblivion too long, though. It took to long to do anything in that game's world.

I tried steeling Fable one time but after that my machine wouldn't play it anymore.

If you play it the way it comes, straight out of the box, that's probably best.

For $20 it's worth it. Game has a few issues, but it's pretty fun.

Fable is fun, but more of an interesting experiment in AI programming than a game. There's some good action and quests. You can actually be evil too. Really evil. Like marry women and kill them evil or lead people from town to a temple and have them sacrificed evil. You can do anything you want. Also you can be the goodiest, goody-two-shoes of Goody-goodliness Land.

But for PC, Oblivion is probably one of the most in depth and rich RPGs ever made. Fable is okay, but Oblivion is way better.

Eegh. I have to disagree with Oblivion being one of the "richest" RPGs ever made. I agree, it had a lot of content...

But it was 10 hours of gameplay stretched over 100 hours. Maybe it's just me, but I need some kind of purpose and structure. I loved the Baldur's Gate series, for example, because I felt part of a great story, not just a cue ball on a very large, very complex billiard table.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
