I have a good lawyer. I still think about how serious the accident was. My car was sooo totalled and if you had seen it you would wonder how I came out of it alive. Guess the good Lord wants me to stay around for a bit longer. I am truly lucky or angels surrounded me. Glass was all over my body and not one scratch. I'll be in physical therapy for about another two months.
Now, I am so happy for Dean. He's a good Son and deserved this good new job. I'm sure the 45 mile drive one way will have him listening to a lot of talk radio and or listening to some good Music ;-) Well, he could also buy some books on tape. I'm betting he'll listen to books on tape. I remember fondly having him on my lap and reading to him. Once I did that, he took off on his own and read books like somebody eating a potato chip. You can't just eat one. To him, his food was books. I would catch him reading in bed with a flashlight when he was suppose to be fast asleep ;-)
I'm really happy for Dean, I can't say that enough. It took a bit of stress from me. I was a bit worried but mostly felt something good would come along. I would say, to just be yourself Dean. You already know things and does that surprise me? Don't think so ;-)
Introduction to the Sermon
The Rediscovered Country
By having my own blog for 7 to 8 months I've been able to figure out something about the internet. Something I've suspected for awhile but now am sure of.
An Assassin of Time
Otherwise my wife has been gone to West Virginia all week on a Missions Trip and my daughters have been out of state too with my parents on vacation. Meaning it's just been me and the dogs. And a lot of quiet. I've even had time to read properly, and I've mediated a few times.
Got all but 3 of the puppies sold now (the female pups have been aggravating the crap outta their daddy and he growls and blows at them like a bear, but secretly he adores them, you can tell by watching the way he watches over them), and I've been roaming the woods a good deal. Got some patrolling in earlier this week, worked an unresolved murder, and tomorrow morning I plan to go throw discuss. First time this spring and I'm really looking forward to it, though I gotta get back in throwing shape obviously.
I got some pretty good writing done I think so that wasn't half bad, and I'm looking at possibly taking on a couple of new consulting projects. We'll see.
I took to reading a couple of great books including The Knowledge Deficit (by the same guy who wrote Cultural Literacy which I also read), a biography of Michelangelo, God's War: a New History of the Crusades, and Artemis Fowl: the Lost Colony. I like the Fowl books a lot but it is Butler, not Fowl, I really like. I've often thought that I'd like to have Butler to pal around with, he seems like exactly the kinda guy I'd like to go on patrol with. You could trust him and you wouldn't have to explain anything to him, he'd just be able to read the environment. I like fellas I know I can trust to read the environment. And I got to finish listening to Empire of Gold, the Modern Scholar series of lectures on the New Roman Empire (Byzantium). Damn that was good. I really like Madden, he's a great if somewhat befuddled professor. Best lecture series I've listened to in awhile. I highly recommend it.
I also finally got to see Casino Royale which I must admit just plain impressed the hell outta me despite being wacky and very unrealistic in parts, cause I'm not really a big Bond fan. But this Bond was enough of a Dick for me to find him enjoyable, and even partially believable. He was also extremely observant, and clever, two traits I find admirable in any man. Especially an operative and an officer. Plus he worked alone, totally alone and deep under, completely out of contact with his superiors, which I like and is by far the best way to operate if you can get away with it. He was a little slow with the girl though. Well, really slow with the girl, but that's Bond I guess. I also watched the Special Features disc and I'm really gonna hav'ta learn this free running. That would help me out a lot when I'm vadding, especially roofing. I suspect that just by watching them dance around like that the real secret is once you get moving don't stop. Stopping means failing and failing means falling and that's never much good when you're roofing. Anyway I'm thinking about adding it to my personal film collection. It was that good to me.
Well, I think I'm gonna go grab a Coors, play a little Star Fleet Battles and if the moon shows through the clouds pull out my telescope and enjoy my night alone. Should be pert' near a full moon by now if these danged clouds will just scatter.
My only real regret this week is that I didn't get to go fishin. Now all I gotta do is get the house cleaned by the time my wife gets back tomorrow night. It'll be a drag to clean but on the upside I'm expecting a lot of good reunion sex when she gets back, so that won't be all bad.
That's always a good thing MJ.
Hope and pray you recover well and quickly.
I had no idea Dena was your boy, unless I'm missing some kinda inside joke. Well, in that case get him to listen to a lecture or two on tape as well. I'll bet he'll like that too.
Evening all.
No, that is not a joke. Dean is my Son ;-) I had that guy when I was just 16. We kinda grew up together. He has always been good to me. Well, it says something that I have written on his blog for over four years ;-) How many grown men would allow that. Well, even his wife doesn't mind. I live in San Antonio, Texas. That is a long way from Michigan and it is my way of keeping my loved ones here in my heart.
Do you enjoy fly fishing? You probably mean regular fishing. I've always wanted to learn flyfishing. I live alone and would like to find a group of fishermen that do the flyfishing. I guess I could look through the internet to find a group. I know women that enjoy it as well.
Fly fishing is great to me if you tie your own flies. An old buddy of mine, the one who taught me to fish used to take me a good deal, but he's surging right now, and since he's been in Europe, Asia, Afghanistan and the Middle East a lot over the past few years we don't fly fish much anymore.
But when he retires in a year or so I'd like to go out west a trouting.
I read a real good book on fly fishing and fishing techniques in general a few months back. Unfortunately I can't recall the name.
But get some books and find some guys and give it a whirl. Fishing is real good for the soul. And it can be kinda tasty when you get good at it.
I don't care much for guttin myself, but nothing is perfect.
Take care and recover comfortably.

Enjoy!
That makes me wanna go look at the moon, and I think I will.
I'll go to the library this over the next few days and look up books on fly fishing. Good idea Jack ;-)
JLB, what beautiful pictures.
I like fly fishing no matter who ties the flies. In fact, I don't have the time or the talent to tie my own flies, but I dearly love perfecting my cast. I know a couple of guys who have been fly fishing a few times and have become instant "purists", and they also only like fly fishing if they can "tie their own flies" because they heard someone else say it so now they think the only good fly fisherman is the one who makes his own.
Phooey. That's like saying the only good cook is the one who grows his own wheat and grinds it into flour. Or the only good driver is the one who fabricates his own metal and builds his own engine.
News flash. Tieing your own lures only helps (or hurts) your chances of catching fish, not your casting ability or your ability TO fish. And if you caught a fish every time, they'd call it "catching", not "fishing".
Okay, the female fisherperson has tread on sacred ground, go ahead and shred.
Linda
Yeah, that all pretty much all links back to me but it's still true. And I never get tired of hearing it.
But a good cast does help if you can learn to put it right on top of a sweet spot.
You know what I've found helps?
Soaking your flies and fly components in blood and insect juices. Fish seem to like that. Course if you got a heavy current then that washes pretty quick so find a nice tame patch and try a few casts that way. Also if you'll put a real insect on your fly every now and then, that'll sometimes make em pop if they're tending to just dart around or circle.
Linda,
I agree with you. Tying your own can definitely add another dimension to fly fishing, and maybe add more satisfaction (but frustration first). But it's not a requirement.
Tying gives you something to do in the off season, and can help keep your mind on the sport during the dead of winter. And in theory, it can be cheaper, but only if you do a BUNCH of fishing.
I’ve tied my own. But I just buy my flies these days. Like these: Orvis Humphreys
I took a fly fishing &tying class taught by Joe Humphreys in college about 20 years ago. Good memories.
And by coincidence, I eventually settled down a couple miles from a spot where Joe still offers training courses. So I see him most every year. And I’ve consumed a few adult beverages with him over the years too. Good memories….
And trout season opens here in less than 8 hours! I can hardly wait. I‘ll be out there for sure, but I’ll be dunking worms the first few days. That’s fun too!
And Druids!
Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.
Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
