BSG Picked Up For The 4th

TV Guide is reporting that they're expecting an announcement today that will make it official - SciFi's Battlestar Galactica will be picked up for a 4th season with an order of 13 episodes.

I agree with Dean that the show has been slipping. Just not to the degree that he thinks it is. However, Ron Moore complained during season 2 about the additional episodes and that it led to what many feel was the weakest episode of that season, "Black Market." Hopefully, back to season 1 numbers, Moore and crew can tell a tighter, more compelling drama. And it would also seem that SciFi learned from the errors of it ways by expecting too much (unrealistically so) from their highest rated show. They got a bit greedy and the show suffered because of it.

But, now that we're getting a 4th season that means we're also getting a direct-to-DVD movie this summer!

Odds are the SciFi will air this film. As Moore has already stated, it will not continue from the cliffhanger ending but will take place between this season and the next.

Oh, and we find out by the end of the season that a major character is a Cylon. And it's not supposed to be Starbuck.

Dean, I still think you owe me a steak dinner. Just on principle. Don't fight it. You know I'm right.

I'm glad. Twenty episodes is a lot for something as time-centric as BSG, and not only does it mean seven fewer episodes for them to have to work with but it also means one fewer cliff-hanger to set up each season.

I don't know, but I kind of liked the webisodes. During the off-season perhaps they could do something like that, with everyday occurrences like ship repairs or a commissioning ceremony for an extremely minor character. Perhaps focus on Bulldog...
It'd be a good way to keep up the fix without feeling the need to truly advance a storyline.

What will the movie be about, though, if the cliffhanger is left unresolved? Pre-war Caprica? Life on other ships? Post-attack Pegasus? The orbital defense by the fleet during the attack?

I really wish they'd move the show back to Friday nights...or at least show Sunday's repeat on Friday nights. Having no life, I really looked forward to BSG as something to do on Friday.

Who is the Cylon?

As for the Cylon character I'm trying to imagine who could be immune. Presumably Admiral and Major Adama, as they're related. Presumably Baltar, as he wishes he were. Not Helo, as he had a child with Athena (and having his actions not be due to humaneness but loyalty would be a bummer). Who does that leave?

Roslin- she would have been detected; can Cylons have cancer?
Tigh- a delicious irony
Gaeta- would be in the Sharon mold
Dualla- same as Gaeta
Tom Zarek- would be disappointing
Cally or Tyrol- can't be both, as they've had a child

I lean towards Tigh being the Cylon. I keep going over D'Anna and her reaction when she sees the other Cylons. Saying something along the lines of I'm sorry, I didn't know. From what we know, Tigh got the worst of the abuse from the cylons - locked up, tortured, loses an eye. Don't know much about his previous history, and it would certainly be a delicious irony if he is a Cylon.
Although they really mind-screwed Starbuck and imprisoned her in that cylon-baby factory, so there is always that possibility.

I would have to say it is the President-I can't remember her name offhand.

She is the one who is avidly searching for earth...which is on the same path as the cylons.

Can't be a coinky-dink.

Second thought, it doesn't matter who is the cylon. I am sick of the OC-style love triangles, let them all become ASSIMILATED.

sorry,wrong show.

Not Helo, as he had a child with Athena (and having his actions not be due to humaneness but loyalty would be a bummer).

I dunno, I think it'd make sense if Helo was one of the final five Cylons. When the Cylons began their birth/romance experiment with Helo and Sharon it was said that Cylons were unable to reproduce together. What if the final five models were able to reproduce with the other seven but because they were banished or disappeared (or whatever backstory elements keep their identities unknown from the others) the Cylons weren't able to make Cylon babies? In addition, if he's a Cylon, Helo's constant self-righteousness could be a "flaw" that led to his ouster from the Cylon hierarchy, much as D'Anna's obsessions did her in.

As for Tigh, yes, it'd also be deeply ironic if he were a Cylon, but how far back does the infiltration of humanoid Cylons go? Tigh and Adama have known each other for how many years? This adds some interesting wrinkles into the Cylon backstory. What's more, it introduces the idea of the humanoid Cylons aging, which, save for the "half-Cylon" Hera, has yet to be shown.

Finally, having a child doesn't rule out anyone from being a Cylon. Being someone's child presumably does. Tyrol, Cally, and Admiral Adama are still possible Cylons, and all three of them have been wronged by the Cylons one way or another. (Doubleplus irony if Tyrol's the Cylon, since it makes Cavil truthful at the end of last season: "You're a Cylon. ... No, just kidding, I'm a Cylon but I haven't seen you at any of the meetings.") But making Adama the secret Cylon is a jumping the shark moment, and Moore knows that (or had better know it).

So let us assume Lee is immune on account of being someone's child. The president is presumably out because of her cancer and also because, like Adama, it would be a jumping the shark moment to make her a Cylon. That means with Starbuck out according to the press leaks, it's better to choose a consequential but not indispensable character like Tyrol, Tigh, or Helo to be one of the final five. Cally, Zarek, Dualla, Cottle, Sam, and Gaeta are, in the present story arc at least, just not important enough to become the Cylon without eliciting a ho-hum reaction from viewers.

I'm thinking that Tigh makes the most sense, as he was the most seriously wronged by D'Anna and also didn't have any children with Ellen Tigh.

Helo and Tyrol are both candidates, but I think their relationships with Sharon would make it too weird to include.

Regarding Tigh, he's being somewhat rehabilitated, and at the same time Helo has experience as an XO and was even described similarly to John the Baptist. I say Tigh is discovered to be Cylon, is removed from his position, and Helo steps in. If he's a Boomer-style sleeper then he'll disappear as a major character. If he's like Athena, he may eventually return to his old position.

Gaeta's my second pick, although I think it'd be a cop-out.

OK, one additional thought if it's Tigh: If it's discovered he's a Cylon he should either "switch programming" like Galactica Boomer (which will probably lead to him being airlocked) or he should stay in character, and if he stays in character it's hard to not see him killing himself. There's just too much baggage in that one-eyed head of his for him to accept being a Cylon -- he'd be much worse off than Boomer was during her realization.

They say a major cast member will be outed as a Cylon. I do not believe that Gaeta, Tyrol or Dualla or anyone else that isn't in the opening credits count.

I think we can discount anyone that has had children as Helo and Sharon were the first to create a hybrid. This leaves out Admiral Adama.

I think we're looking at Tigh or Roslin.

Additionally, once this Cylon is discovered that would mean they're one of the Final Five. They may not be acting on the same kind of programming as the others. Turning on humanity may never, ever occur to them.

If I were a betting man I'd lean toward Tigh but Roslin gives me pause.

Remember Cylon baby blood? What if it cured her because she herself is a Cylon? Did they ever try testing Hera's blood on anything that didn't come from Roslin?

Now that would be damned interesting. The President of the Colonies is a Cylon. And given her very aggressive action against Cylons in the past the people will have a hard time turning on her. Along with Adama she's been one of the strongest voices in dealing harshly with them. Crazy harsh.
