Wii at last!

Noon, Toy R Us, no line, empty parking lot, no crowd. The Target near my house was sold out in five minutes after opening today, but for some reason this TRU went unnoticed by the ravening hordes.

Also, free tip: buy a battery charger and some rechargeable batteries. Yes, you'll feel like you're getting reamed on the price--a recharger plus 8 batteries will set you back $40-$50--but you will soon discover that those Wii remotes frickin' eat batteries like popcorn (buy four rechargeables per remote so you just never have to wait to swap 'em out).
My "game" plan is to stick with wiisports for now, and order the ocassional game via blockbuster along with our usual movies. That way we can playtest the games and if one really grabs us, i'll buy it. Wiisports is just amazing... its like ten games, not one.
man this thing is cool! i dont even have a Mii for myself yet :)
For rechargeable batteries, you want Thomas Distributing. You've never heard of some of their brands, but they work great and are cheaper than retail ($6 for four AAs for instance, a standard charger's eight bucks).
They also offer more expensive batteries with greater capacities and faster chargers than you can get at the local Rat Shack.
You'll discover this soon enough in time if you don't believe me now. ;-)
On the other hand, I'm not sure the "classic game controller" is worth the money. We bought two, and we're still not sure we needed them. They aren't strictly necessary. Save your money on those until you're sure you want them.
In any case, these things are voracious battery-eaters. It makes sense once you grok the technology: it's just an advanced infrared remote control, like the ones you use to control your TV, DVD, etc. Except it's not like your DVD remote where you press a button and a little pulse goes out. There the batteries will last for months. With the Wii remote, it's constantly broadcasting its IR signal every moment that you're playing. It therefore feeds on its batteries like Dracula or Lestat sucking on his latest victim. You can either start buying Energizers or Duracells in bulk, or you can just say "screw it" and invest in the rechargeables.
Buy a good AA recharger, and four rechargeable batteries per remote. Yes, four. Why four, when the remote only requires two? Simple: when the battery goes dead (and the Wii system will tell you, "Your batteries are too weak, you need to replace them") you don't want to have to take them out, put them in the controller, and then wait for them to recharge. Nope, just order the recharger, and buy four per remote. So when one goes dead, you can immediately swap in fresh batteries and put the dead ones in to recharge. A 2 minute inconvenience rather than a 12 hour annoyance.
so i just need to buy that, and buy a separate nunchunk alone. Saves me 40 bucks.
I think I'll look for some cheap Gamecube controllers instead of the "classic" because its the same thing. Heck might as well scour bargain bins for gamecube titles while I am at it since the wii is backwards compatible.
Mind you, I've recently got the PS3 and it's remote recharges from a usb cable connected to the ps3 itself. No battries to buy,, you can even hold down the ps button and get a reading of you power remaining on the screen. Thing is light as could be (the remote that is, the console is a chunk).
"Oh yeah, we have like 40 of those, but no one wants to spend like $600 bucks", said as if THAT was obvious.
If you can't get the geek register guy at Best Buy hyped about your product, give it up.
However, if you are so inclinded, I suggest a call to your local Best Buy to see if they have any in stock.... Good luck.
You need to swap Wii addresses with people, be connected to a wi-fi network, and set your Miis to visit other Wiis. Only then will your Miis migrate to other Wiis.
When you get a Wii address go into your Address Book and input it. You'll send an e-mail to that person's Wii and they have to approve it. Once done, if they have thier Miis set to migrate, you'll begin to swap Miis automatically. Additionally, in your Mii menu, you can manually send Miis to anyone in your Address Book.
I currently have Miis from Frank J. over a imao.us and a few commentors here as well.
Maybe the part I'm missing is putting a Wii address into my address book? Is that how I do it? Where the frack is the address book?
Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.
Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
