The New Marketing
Dean
My lovely wife recently linked this hilarious GEICO commercial.
She actually voluntarily, and spontaneously, for no compensation, put up a GEICO ad on her site. Why?
I've said this before, but I'll say it again: the new pact between advertisers and the audience is that if you entertain us, we will reward you with our support.
Well I guess that's not new. But this part is:
Entertain us, and we'll give you free advertising. Sort of like The Snickers "Happy Peanuts" Song.
The most effective ads of the early 21st century will be ads that are witty, intelligent, engaging, and maybe even a little subversive.

GEICO gets a little pat on the head for hiring a smart ad agency. But hiring ad agencies is not their line of business; selling insurance is their business.
I'll judge them by how well they do that, thank you very much. They don't do nearly as well as USAA, though they do a more thorough job of stuffing my mailbox with their print ads.
Yeah, the ads are cute (so is the gecko). Their ad department gets props for hiring good people and good agencies. I'll remember that next time I'm in need of an ad agency, not when it's time to renew my insurance.
But I'll be very amused if the two ad lines converge!
Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.
Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
