Game Unit Sales

I see that Xbox 360 is still king of the world. They easily outsold the Wii and the PS3 in November and December.

More supply always wins. What they should really check is XBOX360 vs Nintendo DS Lite. Most people who couldn't get a Wii got a DS Lite instead.

There aren't enough titles for the PS3 to drive demand yet, esp not enough making full use of its capabilities. Look for them to be the biggest seller this time next year.

Not so fast. The article is dated (Jan 2) and things have changed.

From the Jan 2 article:

According to today's estimates of NexGen Wars, a website that tracks game console sales, Sony has sold about 854,000 PS3s and Nintendo about 2.2 million Wiis since launch. Microsoft is estimated to have about 9.4 million Xbox 360 units in the market.

So as of Jan 2, it was

XBox 9.4 million
PS3 0.85 million
Wii 2.2 million

Visiting NexGen Wars today (the same source for the numbers above), I get the following numbers for total sold as of Jan 22:

XBox 10.3 million
PS3 1.2 million
Wii 4.1 million

Thus over the last 20 days the following units have been sold:
XBox 0.93 million
PS3 0.31 million
Wii 1.89 million (one of which went to the Esmay household)

Wii is currently selling at twice the rate of XBox since Jan 2. I also think the nearly 2 million Wiis sold in 20 days also explains the shortages.

Then considering from Wii launch Nov 18 which was the timeline of the original article:

The Wii was the defined winner over the PS3 in terms of units sold. NPD, a market analyst group, estimated that nearly 1.8 million Wii consoles were sold since its launch on November 19, outpacing the PS3's 750,000 units. However, the Xbox 360, which Amazon recorded as the top selling gift item of 2006, beat them both. NPD suggests that two million of Microsoft's next-gen system were sold during the same November/December timeframe

So since the Wii has been introduced, around 3 million XBox's (2 million at article press and 1 million since) have sold compared to 4 million Wiis.

What TallDave said. In the long run it'll always be titles that drive demand. It was Final Fantasy 7 that made everyone want a PSX, Street Fighter II that made everyone want a SNES, and Super Mario Bros made everyone want a NES.

Right now Xbox has some killer titles (Gears of War, Dead Rising, etc). We'll see what the competition gets.

Yeah, there's an axiom in IT -- applications drive everything, esp. the hardware. It remains to be seen if the PS3 developer community will produce the kind of "gotta have" hits that cannot be done on the inferior hardware of the other systems, or if the box is just too far ahead of the curve.

More supply always wins

There's an (apparently true) urban legend about the 5 million units of E.T. that Atari put in a landfill.

Man, that game was awful.

Oh, a couple interesting points about the price, which Dean and a lot of others are complaining about: believe it or not the unit is actually sold at a big loss. That's right, it actually costs even more to make than the $600 you're shelling out. Which is why I suspect the device is not aimed at families, but at the young adult gaming comunity.

How the frak do you exchange Miis with your friends? We've got two created and the internet turned on. WHat the heck else do you do?

That community already has something better - a PC. Unless I see the PS3 produce at absolute deluge of killer apps, I'd say Sony is going to get left behind. Welcome to the new Dreamcast.

Well, that's precisely what they're attacking. They have a hardware platform that they believe will greatly exceed PC capabilities for several years.
