Pope Calls For Religious Freedom In Turkey--& Lives

I see the Pope's been in Turkey--an almost entirely Muslim nation--for the last few days and so far no one's cut his head off.

I also see he's suggesting that religious freedom should be a requirement for Turkey's entrance into the European Union.

Yes, I should think that a basic requirement. Modern Turkey is a good nation in many respects but the lack of religious freedom there is deplorable.

I don't agree with much of what the Pontiff says/does, but I have to commend him for sticking to his principles. He's got guts - which most Europeans seem to have lost.

Yep. Like his predecessor, he's a brave man.

Wow. They didn't kill the Pope?

What extraordinary forbearance.

Well you know, Ron, they're Muslims, and as we saw when the Pope made his offensive statement a few months ago, literally hundreds of Muslims around the world rioted, and one shot a nun.

So everyone knows all 1,000,000,000 are just nutjobs waiting for an excuse to kill anyone who offends them.

Interesting slip there, Dean. That wasn't Ron. I'm Ron!

But really, saying the Pope didn't get hurt is silly. He's a head of state and is being protected like nobody's business. Terrorists don't attach hard targets.

Your story is that in fact there's been little unrest in Turkey since the time the Pope has been there. That's a real story. His non-assassination isn't.

Irony, baby.

Anyway: the Turks didn't uninvite him, their heads of state and of mosques visited with him, he had mass... perfectly nice visit so far.

I agree with him about freedom of religion though. Kinda scandalous that even though their democracy works pretty well they still don't have such freedom.
