Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Silly Fun (Arr!) Vs. Serious Issues

Since it was raised earlier by my brother Ali: This "Talk Like A Pirate" nonsense is just fluff. Same like dressing up on Holloween like ghouls or zombies or torturers. If you want to know how I feel about it (and how I imagine most Dean's World contributors feel about it) if we're talking seriously, please see this essay.

We're not above having fun with Hollywood fantasies here. But we aren't stupid ye know. Ye scurvy dog.

The day that we can have "International Talk Like A Terrorist Day" and laugh about these kinds of things is a day I will look forward to, because it means we will have nothing left to fear from terrorism.

Actually getting there? That's the question.

Oh, please. We make terrorism jokes today. Dark humor and whistling by the graveyard are embedded in our culture. Do some people get shocked and offended? Yes, but that's never stopped tasteless humor before.

If tasteless humor was stopped 90%+/- of the world's laughter would be gone.

Methinks it behooves us to tickle our funny bones, aar. Laughter be warranted when warranted; killin' when killin' be warranted. And crying when crying be warranted - for those of ye feelin' like a lass! Har! Har!

As you know, I totally agree with the idea of treating terrorists as enemies of the state (pirates). I still like the Disnified 'avast ye mateys' Pirates.

But talking like a pirate is guy thing. Even in the movies, the toughest lady pirates never say arrr. Don't know why.
