Not just "another Senator": the sponsor of the bill, Senator Coburn. I suspect he knows whereof he speaks, especially since he and Senator Stevens tangled once before on the Bridge to Nowhere.
So my apologies to Senator Byrd for assuming the worst of him.
Speaking as a former AK resident (but I moved before Stevens was elected), it is unlikely he will be re-elected. Nor will the governor. At least, that's what I'm hearing from my friends still in the state...
Stevens has been in the Senate since 1968, and doesn't even have to run again until 2008--assuming he does.
Methinks he feels quite invulnerable. (And by the way, he is known to wear an Incredible Hulk necktie in some Senate debates. I don't know if Vic Stein knew that or not but it's true.)
It seems unlikely that Stevens wouldn't win re-election. His current approval rating is 61%, and pretty consistent across the political spectrum. Depressing, isn't it?
We're down to:
Byrd, Robert C.- (D - WV)
Hatch, Orrin G.- (R - UT)
Stevens, Ted- (R - AK)
Bennett, Robert F.- (R - UT)
...and Bennett's given an equivocal denial.
And another Senator has openly accused Stevens.
So my apologies to Senator Byrd for assuming the worst of him.

Dont' feel bad, you'ld be surprised how many people get this wrong.
Yup. He's all but worshipped up there, despite being a major league Adam Clymer to pretty much everybody.
