Children of Men

This movie looks promising.

That's what good Science Fiction is really about: thinking about possibly world-changing scientific events, and exploring their ramifications.

(Thanks Jesse.)

Another one that looks good is "The Fountain," by the director of "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream."

Perhaps I'm becoming too jaded but I can already imagine the leftist cant that'll be thrown at us masquerading as prologue and dialogue. Sad really, I know I shouldn't pre-judge the picture just because Hollywierd has screwed the pooch on so many good sci-fi flics, but I think I'll just wait for this one to go to DVD.

Women stop being able to have babies.

Everywhere worldwide.

While I liked the writing in Children of Men, the setting, most of the plot, and the various sociological insights, I found the conclusion unsatisfying as it never got around to explaining why women stopped having children or (*spoiler* - avert thine eyes!) restarted having babies.

/spoiler

Because of that hole, I expect the public won't take too well to the film.

Jody,

I've never read the book, but I don't think it matters much as long as the story is well-told.

Seems more than a bit Messianic to me. And of course they turn to the "greatest minds in the world" who are "working for a new [improved] society."

Can anyone say "best and the brightest?" The march of the technocrats. Arrgh.

On the other hand, Cuaron is an excellent director, the cinematography in the trailer was excellent, the cast top-notch, and the music powerful.

If they don't go over the top with all the "only the experts can save us now" bilge, I might enjoy it. :)
