My mother-in-law was born in Mexico. My wife is half-Mexican, and my children 1/4-Mexican. My normally undemonstrative son was very offended by the protests. He cited 37 students who skipped class, of whom only 3 could actually verbalize why. The other just used it as an excuse to skip class.
Today, he is talking about buying a T-shirt with an American Flag with the slogan, "Love it or Leave it." I have never seen him so exercised about anything politically before this issue. He is angry at the protestors, and according to him, so are many of his fellow Mexican descent students. He particularly doesn't like the waving of the Mexican flag. He wonders why the protestors don't wave American flags instead. And being a good Texan, he is very offended at the notion of flying the Mexican flag above the Texas flag, much less Old Glory.
Why don't we just annex Mexico? It would improve the quality of their government, reduce corruption, and give them a voice in the politics that drives their economy and living conditions far more than Mexico City ever could hope to. Call the region the United Mexican States of America and allow them to settle on either their existing state borders or new ones.
Other than the inflated pride in an otherwise third-world nation, what would the Mexicans have to lose?

I don't know about other parts of the country, but being a Texan, we remember that it has only been about 100 years since our last war with Mexico. If they push things much further, the next time Mexican soldiers start shooting at Border Patrol agents across the Rio Grande in Texas, the governer may escalate things a lot faster than the White House might like (especially since Texas still has the State Guard, not to be confused with the National Guard and not in any way under Federal control. AND the Texas Rangers, who the Mexicans have strong if not fond memories of.)

There is no way the US wants to go the way of the EU, with all their ethnic groups living within countries, but not assimulating into the country. The US is heading in this direction, with the bi-lingual education requirements, mainly in reaction to the Mexicans. The Illegals Mexicans have all ready invaded Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada. The local Wal Mart construction was shut down for one week with the deportation of 50 illegal mexican workers. they were hired by a Colorado construction company to work in Wyoming.
Our border control with mexico is useless. As some of the deported workers lived in the same apartment complex that I do, they were back in 10 days, the same workers, that can not or choose not to speek english, and they are back at work at the Wal Mart site.
If you want to live in America, with the benefits of freedom, and less coruption, then abide by the laws of America, learn the Americian Language, pay your taxes to the government that supports the maintainance of the infrastructure of this country, and respect the traditions and customs of the country you have choosen to live in. Do not try and force me to convert to your language, your traditions, your way of life. You came here, you are the one that needs to adapt and change.
Deportation does NOT work. We the tax payers pay the expense of sending them back to Mexico. The deported persons are back in the US in weeks, if not days, and right back to work, with the same employer, being paid less than an American citizen, or a green card holder.
So long as their is a demand for cheap labor, and employers willing to violate the law of the land, the illegals will keep coming to the promised land.
We did steal it fair and square and they aren't getting it back.
Of course, they tried to steal it from the American Indians there who in turn stole it from the people who were there before them who stole it from the people who were there before them...
At least we didn't eat the people who were there before us. That should count for something.
