The Dick Cheney Question (Joe Gandelman)

The selection of "muy telegenico" John Edwards to run for Veep with John Kerry has led to a renewed call for a GOPer for President George Bush to dump Dick Cheney and speculation about who would replace him. There are even interesting scenarios on how he will leave the ticket.

And, indeed, most of the news surrounding Cheney these days is highly controversial.

But yesterday CNN political analyist Bill Schneider made his own prediction: he believes Cheney will NOT leave the ticket for two good reasons:

(1)Dick Cheney is a favorite of the GOP base.

(2)The Bush-Cheney campaign has spent a lot of money getting out the message that John Kerry flip flops on issues and by dumping Cheney it would appear to be doing it's own flip flop.

Even so, if you read the otherlinks above you can easily see how even given all THAT, Cheney could exit the ticket with minimum damage to GWB's campaign — and a logical rationale behind it. We'd still bet against it because the Bush family is notoriously loyal and Cheney has been a key Bush advisor. Still, if we see Bush polls seriously nosedive in comings weeks and if there is informed advice behind the scenes (particularly from George Bush, Sr) that a change is in order, a change in the GOP Veep spot is likely.
